Exploring the Types of Dentures

Dentures aren’t a one-size-fits-all deal. There’s a range to choose from:

  • Complete Dentures: When all your teeth have gone, or need to go, these step in to replace the whole set.
  • Partial Dentures: Filling in the gaps when only some of your teeth are missing.
  • Upper/Lower Dentures: Whether just your top or bottom arch needs some attention, we’ve got a denture for that.

Are There Alternatives to Dentures?

Absolutely! Dentures are a fabulous solution for many, but they’re not the only option out there:

  • Dental Implants: They act like natural teeth roots and can be used to support artificial teeth. Plus, they’re a long-lasting solution.
  • Bridges: A nifty way to “bridge” the gap where one or more teeth might be missing.
  • Repair and Care: Sometimes, it might just be about fixing what’s already there.

But it’s important to remember that every mouth is unique. That’s why it’s essential to chat with a professional like Dr. Marisa Patt to figure out the best route for you.

Denture FAQs

Dentures can be a big change, and we’ll do our best to fill you in on what you need to know. If your question isn’t on this list, just give us a call! We’d love to help you feel confident in your dental journey.

Often, the estimated lifespan of a set of dentures is approximately five to ten years. This can depend on how well the dentures are cared for, your eating habits, the strength of your bite, and how fast your underlying bone resorbs. How do I care for my dentures?

Dentures are not like normal teeth and should not be brushed with normal toothpaste. There are special denture cleansers and denture brushes. Clean them daily, like normal teeth. Remove food, plaque, and excess adhesive. Caring for your dentures is caring for your health!

Typically, after getting accustomed to dentures, most patients have no problems with eating. It is recommended to stay away from particularly chewy/sticky foods and treats like chewing gum. These foods can get stuck on the dentures and pull them off their adhesive seal.

While it’s typically safe to sleep while wearing your dentures, it isn’t recommended. Your gums and bones need rest after each day, and taking out your dentures is the best way to relieve the pressure from your gums and care for your mouth.

Dentures are not made of the same material as regular teeth, and therefore cannot be whitened. It is not possible to whiten the plastic, so you might notice staining or darkening over time with use. This is another reason why daily cleaning is important. Sometimes there are denture-specific cleaners that can help with stain removal.
